Garage Door Types: A Quick Study01/21/2017 Back To Blog
In the long life of a good house and home, it will come to the point where one day the garage door will need replacement. This task can be more daunting than first realized, whenever the homeowner begins to face the seemingly limitless range of options available.
Wood Garage Doors
Wood garage doors are often a popular choice with the homeowner, mostly due to their rustic visual appeal. They have a more classic, country appearance which nicely complements homes with other wood features, such as cedar shingles, wood boarding, log or even stone siding. It’s also interesting to know that wood is surprisingly durable and versatile.
Durable, because materials that are natural are readily available for maintenance and reinforcement to prevent rotting and warping. And versatile, because they cannot only be custom cut to fit the required size, but, they can also be cut to accommodate an uneven floor. This latter benefit is also a unique advantage of buying wood. They do require a bit of added maintenance, however, to keep them at their optimum.
Wood doors can be equipped with a residential automatic garage door opener but do require proper weight-bearing consideration as they are heavier than other garage doors.
Steel Garage Doors
Generally, because they can be pre-cut and often come standard-sized, steel garage doors are usually a little less expensive than wood doors. There are however, several quality grades of steel, so prices can vary. The other main advantage of steel doors is they require less maintenance. Some are actually made to have the look of stately and beautiful wood. They often boast superior insulation as well, especially if they have a foam injection included or added. Further, it is a cinch to fit an opener to a steel door for future convenience and ease of operation.
The fact that steel ones are not usually custom cut can act as a disadvantage, however, especially if your house is a little older, and has an odd shaped opening.
Traditional Garage Doors
Traditional garage doors are simply classic. They represent more of a style to choose rather than a type, as they provide the opportunity for the homeowner to have that classic look in either wood or steel. The true hallmark of this type of door is its distinct look of ‘yester-style'. Classic-looking traditional style doors are perfect to grace the older home that has a country or rustic look. And they also have the added benefit of instantly transforming the look of a home to make it look more classic and traditional. There’s an awe-inspiring selection as well, so homeowners do have many options to choose from. It’s best that the homeowner peruse through brochures of available traditional styles or have a chat with a professional.
